SUMMARY:CHARM visits Homeboys Art Academy
DESCRIPTION:What began in 1988 as a way of improving the lives of former gang members in East Los Angeles has evolved into the largest gang intervention\, rehab and re-entry program in the world. \nEach year we welcome thousands of people through our doors seeking to transform their lives. Whether joining our 18-month employment and re-entry program or seeking discrete services such as tattoo removal or substance abuse resources\, our clients are embraced by a community of kinship and offered a variety of free wraparound services to facilitate healing and growth. In addition to serving almost 7\,000 members of the immediate Los Angeles community in 2018\, our flagship 18-month employment and re-entry program was offered to over 400 men and women.

SUMMARY:Guadalupe Rosales: Handtmann Lecture/Roski Talk
DESCRIPTION:Guadalupe Rosales (b. 1980\, CA) is a Los Angeles-based artist who received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016 and was the 2019 recipient of Gordon Parks Foundation fellowship and 2020 USA Artist Award fellow. She is the founder and operator of Veteranas & Rucas and Map Pointz\, two digital archives accessible through Instagram with over 250k subscribers. Aside from these two digital archives on Instagram\, Rosales runs and preserves a physical archive containing vernacular photographs\, flyers\, magazines and other types of ephemera of the 1990’s connected to Latinx youth culture in Southern California and goes as far as the 1940’s. Guided by an instinct to create counter-narratives\, Rosales tells the stories of communities often underrepresented in public record and official memory. By preserving artifacts and memorabilia\, Rosales’ reframes marginalized histories\, offering platforms of self-representation.

SUMMARY:Book Talk—Jessica Marglin\, The Shamama Case: Contesting Citizenship Across the Modern Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Book Talk—Jessica Marglin\, The Shamama Case: Contesting Citizenship Across the Modern Mediterranean \nA discussion of Jessica Marglin’s new book\, The Shamama Case: Contesting Citizenship Across the Modern Mediterranean (Princeton University Press\, 2022). Sponsored by the Center for Law\, History and Culture. Co-sponsored by the Casden Institute and Levan Institute for the Humanities \n  \nAbout the Book:  In the winter of 1873\, Nissim Shamama\, a wealthy Jew from Tunisia\, died suddenly in his palazzo in Livorno\, Italy. His passing initiated a fierce lawsuit over his large estate. Before Shamama’s riches could be disbursed among his aspiring heirs\, Italian courts had to decide which law to apply to his estate—a matter that depended on his nationality. Was he an Italian citizen? A subject of the Bey of Tunis? Had he become stateless? Or was his Jewishness also his nationality? Tracing a decade-long legal battle involving Jews\, Muslims\, and Christians from both sides of the Mediterranean\, The Shamama Case offers a riveting history of citizenship across regional\, cultural\, and political borders. \nOn its face\, the crux of the lawsuit seemed simple: To which state did Shamama belong when he died? But the case produced hundreds of pages in legal briefs and thousands of dollars in lawyers’ fees before the man’s estate could be distributed among his quarrelsome heirs. Jessica Marglin follows the unfolding of events\, from Shamama’s rise to power in Tunis and his self-imposed exile in France\, to his untimely death in Livorno and the clashing visions of nationality advanced during the lawsuit. Marglin brings to life a Dickensian array of individuals involved in the case: family members who hoped to inherit the estate; Tunisian government officials; an Algerian Jewish fixer; rabbis in Palestine\, Tunisia\, and Livorno; and some of Italy’s most famous legal minds. \nDrawing from a wealth of correspondence\, legal briefs\, rabbinic opinions\, and court rulings\, The Shamama Case reimagines how we think about Jews\, the Mediterranean\, and belonging in the nineteenth century. \nAbout the Author: is associate professor of religion\, history\, and law and the Ruth Ziegler Early Career Chair in Jewish Studies at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Across Legal Lines.

SUMMARY:CHARM presents: "Art Beyond the Plateaus" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop reevaluates the role of the Tibetan Empire in the transmission of visual and religious culture across the Himalayas\, Central Asia\, and China. Focusing on art as a vehicle of cultural exchange\, we aim to examine a range of artistic media such as painting\, metalwork\, and textile that developed with great sophistication and prevalence between the 7th and 10th centuries\, while considering how specific religious concepts and practices were represented and disseminated through art across multiple regions. The workshop will also explore both human (political\, military\, economic) and non-human (climatic and the environmental) factors in the development of artistic materials and production methods that took place amid the power struggles between the Tibetans\, Iranians\, Turks\, Arabs\, and the Chinese in Medieval Asia. \nSpeakers:\nChiara Gasparini\, Assistant Professor of History of Art\, University of Oregon\nDavid Pritzker\, Pritzker Art Collaborative (Chicago)\nDiscussant:\nYoonah Hwang\, University of Southern California \nHybrid event – Open to the public

SUMMARY:Live Artists Live: Sings of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by writer and civil rights activist Maya Angelou’s poetic verse\, “The caged bird sings of freedom\,” Live Artists Live: Sings of Freedom celebrates the liberating potentials of art and song. This fourth iteration of USC’s biannual Live Artists Live event spotlights fusions of performance art\, poetry\, and music that amplify oppressed voices and resist racism\, sexism\, xenophobia\, and homophobia. The full-day event brings together internationally acclaimed artists and scholars including Joy Harjo\, former US Poet Laureate\, renowned musician and writer of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation; Guillermo Gómez-Peña\, performance artist\, writer\, radical pedagogue\, and activist against all borders; Xina Xurner\, experimental music/art collaboration between Marvin Astorga and Young Joon Kwak\, whose performances expand ideas about queer and trans bodies; USC Professor Edgar Arceneaux\, an artist whose new project Boney\nManilli explores transnational and intersectional identities; USC Professor madison moore\, artist-scholar\, DJ\, and author of Fabulous: The Rise of the Beautiful Eccentric;\nand Yale University Professor Daphne Brooks\, distinguished scholar and author of several books including Liner Notes for the Revolution: The Intellectual Life of Black\nFeminist Sound.
