Immersive Raphael Project
This interdisciplinary, international project is a virtual immersive environment to reunite the exploration of Pope Julius II’ books and the experience of Raphael’s famous paintings in the Vatican Palace’s Stanza della Segnatura that were their intended setting. Visitors will be able to see the paintings, turn in the space of the room, and hold, open and examine individual volumes, using digital means.

As the Library of Pope Julius II, the Stanza della Segnatura was a naturally interdisciplinary space, where the study of philosophy, theology, poetry, and law converged in the analysis of the texts it housed and the images on its walls. Our project is similarly cross-disciplinary in its scope and approach: we combine interpretive strategies from art history, material culture, and literary studies, as well as interactive media and digital humanities to explore how Julius and Raphael – among the most eminent figures of the Italian Renaissance – built a space for learning about their world.
